Shillelaghs are a custom wooden cane usually made from a certain wood gnarled smeared with butter and cured or placed up a chimney at least that is the traditional way of making this unique walking stick. Most custom shillelaghs are usually just natural knotty wood limbs or saplings that are dried cured and treated.
The shillelagh is often made from blackthorn wood and sometimes some other hard wood and has the appearance of a natural cane. The heavy end of the stick being the handle could be filled with lead. This can be used as a weapon when surprised by an attacker or an aggressive stray animal.
